St. Peregrine

The St. Peregrine statue that was previously in the baptistry has been relocated to the church sanctuary in an effort to promote prayers to this saint known for healing, especially from cancer. 

Parishioners Alexandra and Ed Cangiano have a great devotion to the saint, and they have donated a framed piece that is now hung below the statue. The frame includes information about St. Peregrine, as well as a prayer.

Peregrine Laziosi (1265–1345) is the patron of all who are afflicted with or threatened by cancer, foot ailments, or an incurable disease. As a young man, he lived a dissolute and worldly life. He changed his manner of living because of the good example of St. Philip Benizi. St. Philip was sent by the Pope to preach peace in Peregrine’s town. Peregrine knocked the holy man down by striking him on the face. The saint’s only reply was to turn his other cheek to the youth and pray for him. Peregrine converted immediately, then went to Siena where he was received into the Order of the Servites of Mary.

Peregrine was to have a leg amputated because of a spreading cancer. The night before his operation he had a vision where Christ seemed to reach out from the cross and touch his diseased leg. Peregrine was cured instantly and spent his remaining life in penance and prayer. 

St. Peregrine’s feast day is May 1.
