St. Damien of Molokai was born in Belgium in 1840. Damien was athletic, adventurous, and fearless. He decided that he wanted to become a priest.
Damien was ordained and became a missionary to Hawaii. In 1865, leprosy struck the natives. Large numbers were contracting the disease. They were quarantined on the island of Molokai. Damien volunteered to live on the island and served the lepers.
When he arrived on the island, many of the people were living lives of drunkenness and debauchery. Through his preaching and example, he showed them their true dignity. He took care of them as they suffered and held the hands of the dying. Eventually, Damien contracted leprosy and died in 1889. His witness shed light on the suffering of lepers and inspired a young girl who would become Mother Theresa.
